The 2012 Summer Olympic Games officially start in London this Friday, July 27. The Games feature 26 sports and 39 disciplines ranging from diving and sailing to archery and weightlifting. While most of us can’t make it to London to experience the Games firsthand, there are plenty of other ways to enjoy the excitement.
Host an Olympics-themed party. Check out online recipe databases for an array of tasty treats to nosh on while you watch the Olympics. Honor the host nation with English favorites, or remember the first modern-day Olympic Games with Greek snacks like spanakopita.
Get sporty. Kids may be heading back to school soon, but you can still round up the troops for an evening bike ride or a weekend hiking trip. Enjoy the warm weather while you still can, and get some exercise while spending time with loved ones.
Get crafty. Unearth your old arts and crafts supplies and get creative. You can use ribbon and cardboard to make mock medals. Or, hit the store for plain T-shirts and use rhinestones and fabric paints to cheer on the U.S. in style.
Watch the Games in Chicago. Several bars and restaurants in Chicago are featuring special Olympic-themed food and drinks. For instance, Sidebar Grille in The Loop will offer 10 different Olympic burgers throughout the games. Check out this list for more places to watch the Games.
